This morning we have a 4 hour embroidery workshop making a 8 x 10cm sample. Suitable for all level of skills (level of difficulty: beginner)

Background
Gold-thread embroideries have been cherished as some of the most exquisite designs all over the world and hold an important role in textile history of many civilizations, from East asian’ dragons and phoenix, Indian sarees, to the UK’s royal robes and French haute couture.

In Vietnam, traditional golden thread embroidery is found on precious royal robes and in sacred places of worship.

In ancient times, it took 5 – 8 years for an embroiderer to learn their trade and become super professional, but here are a few techniques including gold thread embroidery that we can all try nowadays.

Embroidery artist Phạm Ngọc Trâm will share her insights and give step by step instruction of ‘gold thread embroidery’ when we make one of the most iconic ancient patterns: “khánh vân”  = the joyful cloud pattern.   This motif is rich in cultural meaning and highly versatile in its application. We will be guided through every step of this process, from drawing the traditional design, to stitching and finishing techniques and some alternative design tips.

Workshop

• Learn the techniques of gold thread embroidery, from preparing the base to handling and securing the gold threads with precision.
• Discover golden thread embroidery in Vietnamese embroidery art artifacts, in comparison with Chinese, Japanese and Korean gold embroidery
• All materials provided for this workshop – fabric, thread, frames etc.
• For those who are more advanced at sewing/embroidery you are welcome to bring your own tools and/or frame. You can use the techniques later at home to embroider goldwork on items such as your clothing, accessories or home furnishings.  Or for the workshop bring an item you already have that is embroidered or an item of clothing to add your own cloud creations

Venue: Đình Tú Thị – Tu Thi Communal House, số 2 Yên Thái – dedicated to the founding father of hand embroidery in Vietnam

Time: 9am-1pm

dress code: for this workshop you are warmly welcome to dress in an ao dai so that we really get into the atmosphere of the workshop and its setting
