100,000VND

THIS IS EVENT IS NOW FULL.  PLEASE RSVP FOR THE WAITING LIST. THANKS

This compact 2-hour walking tour will take you to Hanoi’s Old Quarter to explore the 3 communal houses of the Hang Gai Ward – Hà Vỹ, Tú Thị, Yên and Thái.   Each site, with the different gods and historical figures they worship, tell a distinct story of the locals, their craft and their reverence for the past.  Join us to learn about the controversial empress Ỷ Lan, about pioneers of craft industries who migrated to Hanoi’s inner core and settled here generations ago and so much more.

Further details:

  1. Hà Vỹ Communal House – built in mid-19th century,  worships the progenitor of painting and decorating furniture, gilt wood chests, trunks as well as panels, altar pieces … (Trần Lư) who started this trade in the 16th century.
  2. Tú Thị Communal House – its proto-Vietnamese name meaning Embroidery Market Communal House, worships the progenitor of embroidery in Vietnam, who brought the craft here in the 17th century (Lê Công Hành). The communal house was built later in 1891 in the Nguyen Dynasty.
  3. Yên Thái Communal House – one of the places that worship Empress Mother Ỷ Lan, a concubine and regent in the early Lý Dynasty (11th century) who held significant power over the nation during the years her husband went conquering lands in the South. The house’s history stretches back hundreds of years as records have existed as far back as 1753.

Also since 18 August falls on 15 July lunar calendar, this is the very day that the gates to the underworld are opened, there may have a chance to observe the absolution ceremony for the wandering souls (Vu Lan festival day also known as the Ghost Festival or Hungry Ghost Festival).

Start: we meet outside the The Hanoi Cafe & Restaurant in Yên Thái Street, old quarter

Timing: this walk starts early to avoid some of the morning heat

Numbers: maximum 10 people (welcome email and exact meeting point will be sent to those confirmed on the walk) – there will be a waiting list if/when the walk becomes full

Please RSVP via google form (by 15 August)
