Exploring Buddhist Heritage at Cự Đà Pagoda, Hà Đông, Hanoi

Thanks to one of our lovely FVH members and friends who works with Dr Phương Anh, we have this fantastic opportunity to explore the Buddhist heritage of Cự Đà Pagoda with a particular focus on the significance and writing of the petitions/blessings.

(Cự Đà Pagoda, Cự Đà village, Cự Khê Commune, Thanh Oai district, Hà Đông, Hanoi)

Agenda (morning):

  • 8am dept Hanoi
  • 9am Arrival, welcome and introduction at the Pagoda
  • Tea meditation
  • Introduction to Cự Đà Pagoda and Buddhist documentary heritage
  • Buddha worship ceremony
  • Exhibition and experience of Chinese calligraphy
  • Writing Hán-Nôm prayer petitions (watch and  you can also have your own petition written)
  • Woodblock printing experience
  • We enjoy a vegetarian lunch (Thọ trai) hosted by the Venerable Thích Di Kiên

(Drs Khuyến and Phương Anh are lecturers at the Department of Anthropology and Religious Studies, Vietnam National University)
*We also welcome Dr Trần Đoàn Lâm, who has kindly accepted our invitation to interpret.

Attendance is restricted to a small group size to ensure enough time for our hosts to be able to complete the procedures in the agenda. There will be a waiting list once spaces are full. If we can repeat this experience again, priority will be given to those on the waiting list. We make our way there by mini bus from the Pan Pacific to ensure we arrive/start on time.

Cự Đà village is about 15km south of Hanoi on the banks of the Nhue River. It is the famous noodle village and with lovely ancient architecture. You are welcome to stay on in the village afterwards to explore but you would need to make your way back independently (NB the noodle making is only in the early morning). This event is an academic morning study experience based only at the pagoda.

Timing: 8am depart Hanoi. Event timing 9am-11.30am

Numbers: max 12 pax – we expect this to be a very popular activity so if you sign up and are no longer able to come please let us know asap

Price: VND 380,000 pp includes minibus, donation to the pagoda, lunch, donations to our hosts/experts.
Excludes cost of having your petition written allow VND 30,000-50,000 and woodblock printing appx VND 200,000 (these are optional), and cost of getting back to Hanoi if you stay on in the village
