Following from our mini tour of the Tuồng theatre near Hang Da market at the end of August, this morning is split into 2 parts
Linh, one of the young artists we partner with (who graduated from the Fine Arts University) recently devised a new art workshop based on the face painting tradition of Tuồng theatre.
Tuồng is often referred to as classical Vietnamese opera, its different to other genre of Vietnamese theatre such as Chèo. It uses a series of characters recognizable by their elaborate face make up and costumes. Their personalities are shown through the colour of the face, eyebrows and facial hair. The art of face make up is a distinctive and artistic feature of Tuồng.
Linh is interested in the face painting and the story telling of Tuồng and has created a workshop that combines drawing and painting the face ‘mask’ on dó paper to create a collage. You can make your collage/artwork as simple or as intricate as you like.
