At home with the water puppets. The water puppet theatre of Phan Thanh Liêm
June 23, 2018 @ 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM
Liêm and his wife are instrumental in keeping the art of water puppetry alive through the little theatre in their house in a hidden alley off Khâm Thiên street
The top floor has a mini stage decorated with artificial banyan trees, bamboo trees and a pond. It can seat an audience of 15-20 pax. Liêm and his wife stage a 20 min show including lion dances, buffalo fighting, rice farming and boat racing. We have a chance to hold the puppets and see how they work, chat to one of the modern day masters of the water puppet art, learn how his family has kept the art alive throughout the generations, plus he explains how he makes all his puppets.
Born into a family with a tradition of performing water puppetry in Nam Dinh province, Liêm acquired a passion for this folk art in his childhood. And he shares this with us in house – which is totally taken over by water puppets.
