Film Night: When the Mother is Away
June 28, 2018 @ 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM
150,000VNDThe film “When the mother is away” (Mẹ Vắng Nhà) by Director Nguyen Khanh Du
This film (from 1979) is considered one of the most favoured films about mothers and children in Vietnamese cinematography. It is the beautiful and poetic story describing the life of Ms. Ut Tich living in the Mekong Delta with her five children during the American War. As she had to be away from home in order to carry out the task of transporting bullets for the army in the South for the resistance movement, she assigned her eldest daughter (only 10 yrs old) the responsibility of looking after the household and caring for her siblings. The end of the film focuses on the eldest daughter’s dreams in which she and her brothers and sisters had the chance to wear clean clothes and go to school. One poignant image also at the end shows all the letters taught at school flying up to the sky turning into pigeons in a time of peace without the sound of war.
The film won the Golden Lotus award at the fifth National Film Festival in 1980 and the Crystal Vase award at Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in former Czechoslovakia 1980.
Black & White film with English subtitles
