Tràng Tiền and surrounding roads such as Hàng Bài, Bà Triệu, Hàng Khay etc. are familiar to most of us. As we stroll these streets we will touch on the area’s development from the early days of Hanoi through the French period to the present time, hear some of its eclectic stories and history, notes on theatre and the cinema and the former ‘lives’ of some familiar and not so familiar buildings, including the rise of cinemas in Hanoi, who Hanoi Hannah was, the 2 previous lives of the current French embassy compound, the rennovation of French era buildings….. and a lot more. Hopefully you will discover things you didn’t know about these well-known streets and structures.
Our very simple but detailed route will take us in a rectangle from outside the Opera House, down Tràng Tiền street to Hàng Khay, into Bà Triệu street, towards Hàm Long, returning via Hàng Bài and ending full circle back in Tràng Tiền steet, with a few interesting diversions on the way. This is one on of our longer walks – it lasts 3 hours. If you need to leave before the walk ends that is no problem.
