Mosaic craft (a.m): at home chat with distinguished artist Nguyễn Quý Sơn (Giang Cao, Bát Tràng)

August 9 @ 9:00 AM - 1:30 PM

250,000VND

THE PIONEER OF MOSAIC ART

UPDATED : THIS IS A MORNING EVENT STARTING 9AM

Have you ever thought about from where mosaic artist Nguyễn Thu Thủy gets her lovely mosaic tiles for her public art mosaic creations? They come from one family workshop in Giang Cao, Bát Tràng. She met distinguished artist and pioneer of mosaic art Nguyễn Quý Sơn when she was planning Hanoi’s mosaic wall along the dyke road for the city’s 1,000th anniversary. Since then, Sơn and his team have become the main provider of her ceramic mosaic tiles for most of her creations throughout Vietnam – from Hanoi to the Spratleys and Paracel islands, from Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh City.

We are delighted to have got to know Sơn and his family and with them we are planning 3 main activities over the coming months.

  1. At home talk with Sơn to learn about the history of his craft, what makes his ceramics unique, a look around his home and his factory
  2. A visit to their former home which they are now turning into a ceramic mosaic museum
  3. A tile making mosaic workshop

As these will be small groups we will repeat the activities as we expect this topic to be popular so once all spaces are taken please continue to RSVP for the waiting list and repeat events.

FIRST EVENT. We start off with the at home talk. This is the first time we have done this although we had a detailed planning meeting to run through the content and agenda. Sơn and is wife don’t speak English so his daughter Huyền will translate (she recently graduated from BUV)

Outline. Meeting in his home Sơn, Huyền, and his wife will talk about their creative journey, life before they met Thủy and how her projects have propelled their family business to even greater heights and fame. How the tile making techniques have been developed (its very much a family secret so they can only share certain info), what some of his most memorable projects have been, how a ceramic tile making project is put together and how they work with the relevant artists + time for Q&A. We tour the family house before heading out to look inside their factory a fairly short walk away. Before we start we meet at their nearby mosaic café for coffee and intro.

Meeting point – this will be shared with those confirmed on the event. For info its in Giang Cao off the Long Bien-Xuan Canh road heading towards Ecopark and Bát Tràng (about 30 mins by bus from Long bien bus station). Meet 8.45am

AGENDA

9am-11am at home chat at their house
11am-12noon visit the factory
