April 20 @ 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM

200,000VND

We are delighted to invite on our favourite professors and supporters of FVH to talk about his life long work into the research of typical symbols of Vietnam.

Associate Professor, Dr. Đinh Hồng Hải

Hải’s research is in the fields of the arts, humanity, anthropology and related social sciences. He tudied at Harvard University (USA, 2008-2010) and defended his PhD dissertation at the Graduate School of Social Sciences in 2011. He also worked as a research fellow at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (China, 2006-2007). He is now a researcher at the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (since 2001) and a lecturer at the Vietnam National University Hanoi (VNU).

He has published a 4-volume book on typical symbols in Vietnamese traditional culture which are highly appreciated by culture lovers. Our talk with Hải today is on this topic of a myriad of fascinating symbols that form the basis of so many Vietnamese traditions. The books cover Symbols, the Gods, Mascots and the Ancestors.

The focus of the talk and book launch:

Traditional symbols have served as “fingerprints of the national culture for thousands of years in Vietnamese history.  Hải’s book series goes from sets of symbols to deities (Vols . 1-2) through to mascots, and then integrates them into symbols of ancestors (Vols . 3-4).  His presentation will provide a few examples of how Vietnam’s long historical belief in Animism and Ancestor worship, together with Hinduism, Taoism, and Buddhism, has had a tremendous influence on folk art.  As a result, Vietnam’s traditional symbols have become a kind of syncretic art. Vietnamese folk art is easily found in many objects in prominent religious places, as mentioned throughout his four volumes.

Book Hunter, in charge of the publishing of Hải’s books (https://bookhunter.vn/), will faciltiate, they also recommended the venue and will bring hard copies of Hải’s books in Vietnamese for sale  (unfortunately there are no ENG translations yet)

Hải will talk in Vietnamese and a representative from Book Hunter will translate into ENG/VN. The powerpoint slides are in ENG
