A world’s fair, also known as a universal exhibition or an expo, is a large global exhibition designed to showcase the achievements of nations. During the late 19th century and early 20th centuries they focused on the technological, industrial, and cultural achievements of nations around the world, sometimes displaying cultural superiority over colonized nations.
In French Indochina in 1902 – the Governor General at the time, Paul Doumer, wanted to promote France’s ambitious plans in Indochina as well as showcase the value and beauty of Vietnamese products to a global audience. The essence of these fairs is captured and recorded in a wonderfully curated temporary exhibition (ends 30 June) on display at National Archives centre 1.
“Trade Fair Complex – Convergence of Quintessence” showcases over 300 valuable archival documents, images and video of significant exhibitions and fairs that were held in the Grand Palais, an exhibition and trade fair complex in Hanoi (now the site of the Viet-Xo Friendship Cultural Palace on Tran Hung Dao) built for the 1902 Hanoi Exhibition world trade fair. Also on display are numerous fairs and trade shows held in the US and throughout Europe during the same period that promoted French Indochina to the world, and Vietnamese products, particularly handicrafts. This is a fascinating collection of original documents, film and artefacts each with their own stories, many of which have never been seen by the public before.
Hoang Anh from the Archives team, who put this exhibition together, will be our guide taking us on a journey through this fascinating period showing us how France promoted Indochina within the region and globally.
