Talk + Demo: The Art of Nôm (Part 1)
January 21, 2018 @ 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM
VND200,000FVH is collaborating with the Zenei Group of 5 Vietnamese artist/scholars, Suzanne Lecht and film maker Bill Perna. They have made a film about Vietnam’s thousand year old script called Nôm.
Our 2-part program starts with an introductory talk on Hán-Nôm which sets the scene (21 January 2018). This will be followed by an evening film preview and talk/presentation by Suzanne and one of the artists. It explores the contemporary calligraphic art of Nôm script. Both parts form an introduction for a Nôm art calligraphy exhibition held after Tet.
This is a fascinating opportunity to understand the rise and relevance of the Nôm script in Vietnam and the influence in the past of the Hán script. How do they differ, why did Nôm die out? Can people still read Nôm today? What do they verbally sound like? How do you write Hán and Nôm, why was Nôm used? And many more questions….
We are delighted that Dr Trần Đoan Lâm, Editor in Chief of Thế Giới publishers has accepted our invitation lead talk and discussion (for a second time).
After we heard about the film, we decided to set the scene with Dr Lâm introducing the basic concept of this intriguing topic in an easy to understand way.
How many times on excursions, places of interest, talks and walks have you been told something is written in Hán or Nôm. And you have wanted to know more about what this means.
Well, now is your chance to learn about these fascinating scripts and their importance in Vietnam. You are encouraged to ask questions at any time so it also becomes a discussion.
Those who register by 15 January will receive a token gift. If you register after this date you can still attend but we may not have time to prepare your token gift. Therefore, we strongly recommend you book your place early. When signing up please also include your first name in full and the meaning of your name.
Notes: Dr Trần Đoan Lâm will speak in English (no translator needed)
Venue: The Gioi Publishers, 46 Tran Hung Dao
