Traditional music evening with artist MAI TUYẾT HOA and her folk music band.
Hoa is a very well known traditional musician, folk music researcher and Xẩm artist. She is currently Director of the Center for Research, Preservation and Promotion of Vietnamese Folk Music and head/founder of the ‘Xẩm Hà Thành’ folk music group.
The performance is a mix of hát Xẩm and some other folk music held on the terrace of our FVH friend’s house in Tây Hồ. We hope it will be a magical evening, and there is space for an audience of around 40 people so everyone welcome.

Drinks area and some light refreshments and you are also welcome to bring a bottle with you (alcoholic or non-alcoholic).
This is a ‘dress up’ occasion so feel free to wear ao dai, national dress, smart attire, your favourite outfits.
Apart from being about folk music its also a social evening to catch up with friends as we head into the summer months when many of us go way for the summer or work postings come to an end.

Each piece of music with begin with an introduction to its story, history, importance so that we understand more about the context. (Xẩm, in particular, is a unique genre of folk music that had been popular throughout the Northern delta and midland, with Hanoi being its home and with it comes many stories).
Numbers: space for 40 pax
Venue: near Al Fresco on Tô Ngọc Vân, Tay Ho – full address will be given to those confirmed. NB we will be on the top floor semi outdoor terrace (has roof) up about 5-6 flights of stairs (no lift)
Entry: VND 300,000 per person, as this event has a number of expenses to be covered we greatly welcome advance payment, bank transfer is fine. Bank details will be shared with those who register

Biog
MAI TUYẾT HOA is a very well known traditional musician, folk music researcher and Xẩm artist. She is currently Director of the Center for Research, Preservation and Promotion of Vietnamese Folk Music and head/founder of the ‘Xẩm Hà Thành’ folk music group.
She graduated from the Vietnam National Academy of Music with two university degrees: đàn nhị (2 string bowed instrument) and in music theory.
Currently the leading Hat Xam artist in Vietnam, Ha started her music career from the age of 8 and became a devoted student of the late artist (nghệ nhân) Hà Thị Cầu. The story of her mentor is an amazing story in itself, with a lot on the internet about her work and life. Here is a LINK to one of many articles (can switch to translate in ENG).
Hoa was the person who brought Xẩm folk music back to areas in Hanoi such as at Đồng Xuân market, the Old Quarter and around the King Lê Thái Tổ statue, and initiated the first National Xẩm Singing Festival in 2019, and then again in 2022, and 2023. Hoa has performed globally including the USA, France, Germany, Austria, Japan, Korea, Thailand, and China.
