SHOW 4
This show explores more about Nguyễn Văn Quỳ, how he composed his sonatas and how he taught a French student – Matthieu – how to compose his very own sonata.
Having learnt last month about the life and background of maestro in our Kaleidoscope part 1 show on Vietnamese composer maestro Nguyễn Văn Quỳ, this month we delve into Quỳ’s life as a teacher through the experience and eyes of one of his friends and student – a young Frenchman called Matthieu Frappé. They met in Hanoi, French is/was their common language and they soon became great friends as well as teacher/pupil. Matthieu explains how he was able to compose his very own sonata under Quỳ’s patient instructions while Quỳ joins the show as he recalls the days when he taught his good French friend every Saturday at his home in the heart of Hanoi.
It is also very fortuitous that this show is being broadcast this month as 20 November is Vietnamese teachers’ day. This show is made in honour of Quỳ and his student – the only one he ever taught how to compose a sonata.
We thank Matthieu and Quỳ for their contributions to this show.
