A new Hanoi walk – 2 main themes within a melting pot of topics: General Trần Hưng Đạo and Trần Dynasty generals, intermingled with the French Concession (how it arose and what the area consisted of).
We start on Trần Hưng Đạo street focusing on the man himself, the area’s development around the Central Military hospital 108, up Lê Thánh Tông street, and over the road to Chương Dương Ward ending with General Trần Hưng Đạo on the banks of the Red River.
We go via few diversions and some buildings and alleys you may not have noticed before. We explore many topics from the connection between President Hồ Chí Minh and 108 military hospital and the past lives of the hospital, where Hanoi’s 2nd water tower built by the French is located, why a beer hall (no longer exists) was known as parachute beer, where Hanoi’s oldest gabeled roof house was, to the significance of grooves in the walls along the dyke road, why certain roads are named are Trần Dynasty heroes, what remains of an interesting khu tập thể (condominium) area built largely of wood before ending by one of a few (and lesser known) temples in Hanoi dedicated to General Trần Hưng Đạo.
There are 4 parts that overlap during the walk:
- part 1 – starting with General Trần Hưng Đạo, and Đinh Công Tráng street area
- part 2 – Lê Thánh Tông and Đặng Thái Thân streets and surrounding area
- part 3 – The French Concession
- part 4 – Chương Dương Độ ward, Hàm Tử Quan street ending with General Trần Hưng Đạo at the Red River
A long route packed with information. Its the first time for this walk so please allow a minimum of 3 hours. It will probably end up one of our longer walks.

Meet. 9am outside hospital 108. We end at the Red River no where near the starting point. Full details and exact meeting point will be sent to those confirmed on the walk.
