This is the 3rd year FVH has visited Bá Dương Nội village to watch the proceedings of this 1,000 year-old kite making village’s annual kite festival. Generations have kept this tradition alive. The kites are made in the shapes of crescent moons or boats, attached to wooden flutes. The wind passes through the flutes making lovely soft melodies. The village dates back to the 10th century Dinh dynasty. Bá Dương Nội has a reputation as one of Vietnam’s main kite flying centres. The village annual kite festival his held on the 15th day of the 3rd Lunar month. This year it falls on 19 April in the solar calendar. This is the main festival day. The festival is very local event kept alive by the villagers. Its very likely we will be the only visitors. The village is every friendly and everyone welcomes us with open arms. Please be aware before the competition starts there are a lot of formal speeches, the competitor kites are laid out in the kite temple, logged and numbered. About 2pm we follow the competitors to the beat of drums as they cross over into the fields of morning glory to fly their kites. It is a very relaxing afternoon – sit with a beer in the sun, chat to the locals, or wander round the village. Please be prepared that if there is not a lot of wind it may take time for the kites to fly or the festival may be cut short. So please be flexible. Either way its a really sweet event to be part of.

12.45pm depart Hanoi, arrive Ba Duong Noi Village about 1.30pm
2pm-afternoon Kite festival opening ceremony
Kite flying activities/competition, join the locals as the kites are flown
Depart around 5pm

Donation: 200-250,000 VND pp – this depends on how many people sign up
