Cultural series – talks. Vietnam’s ethnic minority languages

250,000VNDVietnam has 54 recognised ethnic minority groups, each with its own language and culture. In 2017 some 20 cities and provinces around Vietnam organised ethnic minority language courses, while many others include ethnic minority languages in the school curriculum.
Mr Phan Lương Hùng. FVH is truly delighted to welcome Mr Phan Lương Hùng, Professor of Linguistics at the Institute of Linguistics of Vietnam and Head of the Department of Ethnic minority languages of Vietnam. Hùng has kindly agreed to deliver a series of 5 talks on the languages in Vietnam and he will share with us about his projects and research over the past 15 years.
This presentation gives an overview of ethnic minority languages in general, covering topics including, (but not limited to):
- Vietnam as a multi-ethnic and multi-language nation
- Ethnic minority speakers in Vietnam and their distribution
- Language family and language typology
- Language vitality and language preservation
- Writing system of ethnic minority languages in Vietnam
- Some info on Hung’s work on the Cao Lan ethnic language
- Q&A/discussion
