“Vietnamese Buddhism is similar to Chinese Buddhism and has elements found Japanese Zen, Chinese Cha’n, Tibetan Buddhism and Amitabha (“Pure Land”) Buddhism. Most Buddhists in Vietnam belong to the Mahayana school. The main exception is the Mekong Delta area, where many belong to the Theravada school.” (extract from the facts and detail website)
This month’s talk with Lâm is about Buddhism. How many times do we visit pagodas and want to more about the Buddhist altar, the symbols and meanings, what do different statues represent, how and why Buddhism developed Vietnam, importance in today’s life, the main characteristics … and many other discussion points.
Dr Trần Đoàn Lâm (Editor in Chief of Thế Giới publishers) is one FVH’s favourite and regular speakers.
This is a whistle-stop tour of the Buddhist tradition in Vietnam.
Lâm will deliver his talk in his well known way with his trusted blackboard for support. For those who have not attended one of his talks he has an amazing ability to explain the most complicated of topics in a very understandable and engaging way, (he will talk in English)
2pm start lasting min 2.5 hours up to 3 hrs depending on Q&A. This is a huge topic and we expect, as per most other talks with Lam, you will have many questions
