Cultural Series (p.m): everything you need to know about the Mid-Autumn Festival (Tết Trung Thu)

Tết Trung Thu is the Mid-Autumn Festival and Vietnam’s second most important festival after the Tết lunar new year. In the lunar calendar, it falls on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, which is 25 September 2026 this year.
Tết Trung Thu is also known as the “Children’s Festival” where every Vietnamese child dreams about an amazing festival with his/her own brightly lit lantern and a feeling full from munching on mooncakes.
To find out more about why Tết Trung Thu is so important, why the connection with children, as well as its spiritual side and its significance for both adults and children, please come along to our presentation on everything there is to know about the mid-Autumn time of year. Hosted by our special friends and cultural partner group CLB Đình Làng Việt (DLV).
THE FORMAT
- A relaxed informative lecture/presentation by a few of the DLV cultural scholars with our amazing Dr Lâm interpreting into ENG. (download a summary of topics in the ENG PDF link below under more info**)
- Meet and chat with the artisans who make a number of mid-autumn festival folk toys and votive offerings (popular with all ages); see finished and unfinished toys and learn how they are made from scratch.
- Hopefully a chance to take part in making some toys

Dress code: not essential but super lovely for as many of us to dress in traditional or modern áo dài.

The “Lưu Trăng” exhibition is a unique art exhibition space created by a group of young artists and craftsmen from 3 heritage projects: Thong Dong, THE ANNAM, and Của Nả. With their skillful and contemporary artistic techniques and aesthetic thinking, the young artists will bring a magical light museum at 22 Hàng Buồm with giant lanterns, toy vehicles made of gold, and the majestic paper lanterns. In addition, the Mid-Autumn Festival Night is a large-scale procession of 500 people around Hoan Kiem Lake, vividly recreating the lively sounds of drumming, lion dance, and the rustic “Nguyệt Cung” scene, as well as the lively procession of paper horses.
