Cultural series lecture – Hanoi’s iconic khu tập thể (condominiums)
September 30, 2023 @ 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM
250,000VNDA repeat of a very successful talk we held almost the same time last year (how quickly time flies!). And its a great lecture for people new to Hanoi. In addition we hope to launch a new walking tour later this month that focuses a lot on the old condominiums so this lecture is a good link.
We all adore Hanoi’s condominiums (khu tập thể), their community feel and they are so photogenic They also hold very deep and special memories for the Hanoi people. To others they are one of Hanoi’s most iconic symbols ranging from crumbling ochre yellow walls to concrete greys.
There are of course a number of academics who research into the history and society of the khu tập thể complexes. And one is Vietnamese artist, art researcher and lecturer Trần Hậu Yên Thế (also 1 of the 16 Phúc Tân walk public art artists). He has delivered 2 lectures for FVH over the past few years on the wrought iron balconies and facades of Hanoi houses, and the Nghe).
Join us for an afternoon’s presentation on everything to do with the khu tập thể from why these communal living areas arose, to how they were built, the principles behind these neighbourhoods to the social influences and architectural styles. From 1958 to 1990 the khu tập thể complexes covered over 4,000 square metres of Hanoi’s urban area.
Thế will speak in VN and Dr Trần Đoàn Lâm will translate into ENG.
Venue: Dinh Lang Viet Space, in the heart of the Trung Tu/Dang Van Ngu dormitory area. For those not familiar with the venue detailed information will be sent to those confirmed on the event.
RSVP to stella@fvheritage.org
Space for up to 20 people.
250,000 VND pp to cover contribution to the venue, hosts and also some refreshments at the end of the talk
