Film Night – Cô Ba Sài Gòn (The Tailor)
June 29, 2019 @ 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM
150,000VND
The film Cô Ba Sài Gòn (The Tailor) directed by Trần Bửu Lộc and Nguyễn Lê.
Set in Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City) in the 1960s, “The Tailor” is a romantic comedy featuring the culture and lifestyle of the Saigonese as well as the history of the ai dai. The movie aims to honour the beauty of Vietnamese cultural life and it also portrays the image of Saigon in the past as gentle and steeped in contrast to the rush of a dynamic city described by fashion.
The movie tells the story of a young, arrogant girl called Ngoc in the 1960s. She was born into a family of tailors who specialised in making the Ao Dai. She looked down on the career, but by some kind of miracle, travels to the future and meets herself a few decades later. Ngoc sees the tragedy of the tailoring trade in the future. She realises the value of this traditional career and comes to respect the ao dai as well as her family profession.
The film was honoured as the Best Feature Film at the Golden Kite Awards by the Vietnamese Cinema Association in 2017 and selected as the Vietnamese entry for the Best Foreign Language film at the 91st Academy Awards in 2019. It has also been screened in various international film festivals around the world such as 2019 ASEAN Film Festival in the UK and the 2017 Busan International Film Festival in Korea.
