A POSTCARD FROM VIETNAM
Ever thought about who were the first tourists who explored Vietnam? what was it like to discover hidden gems? who founded Sapa and why? How long didi take to get to Ha Long Bay from Hanoi a 100 years ago? what was it like to travel from north to south Vietnam in the feudal era…..
These questions and many more will be answered by our 2 distinguished guests …..
We are delighted to invite Huong T. Bui, PhD Professor (Tourism and Hospitality), Dean of Graduate School of Asia Pacific Studies (GSA), Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU) Japan, and co-author He T. Bui from Vietnam’s National Archives Centre 1 to take us on a trip through Vietnam through the eyes of different genre of tourists from feudal times, through the French colonial period to the present day.
A journey of a lifetime to be fitted into a morning’s presentation!
The topic comes from the book they wrote: “ Vietnam Tourism: Policies and Practices “. Chapter 2 – The History and Evolution of Vietnam Tourism which takes a fascinating look at the development of tourism from the Vietnamese feudal time to French colonization, during the Indochina War and the Vietnam War. The Huong and He analyzed the historical context shaping the evolution of the tourism industry in the early days, that have long-lasting impacts on modern tourism. Huong and He take a fascinating approach that goes back to the monarchical and colonial periods, rather than over-concentration on post 1975.
Get a real insight into how the concept of tourism developed over the eras, how were the hill stations discovered (eg Sapa and Da Lat), how did people travel, what did people look for when they want travelling in the old days…. So many stories, images, and nostalgia.
