Cultural Series (p.m): everything you need to know about the Mid-Autumn Festival (Tết Trung Thu)

A multiple choice question – what is typically regarded as Vietnam’s second most important annual traditional festival:

1. Tết Trung Thu
2. Lễ Vu Lan
3. Tết Nguyên Đán

Congratulations if you answered (1).  Tết Trung Thu is the Mid-Autumn Festival 2^nd in importance to (3) the Tết lunar new year.  It falls on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, which is 25 September 2026 this year.

Tết Trung Thu/Mid-autumn Festival, is also known as the “Children’s Festival” where every Vietnamese child dreams about an amazing festival  with his/her own brightly lit lantern and a feeling full from munching on mooncakes. And preparations begin far in advance.

To find out more about why Tết Trung Thu is so important and significant (for both adults and children) please come to our lecture and presentation on everything there is to know about the mid-Autumn time of year, hosted by our lovely special friends and cultural partner group Đình Làng Việt (DLV). We delve deep into the topic.

There are 2 elements to this event:

1. Lecture/talk on everything about this festival presented by some of DLV’s artists and scholars with ENG interpretation by amazing Dr Trần Doãn Lâm (download a summary of topics in the ENG PDF below)
2. Meet the artisans and experience the significance of a number of iconic Mid-Autumn festival folk toys and votive offerings….. what they are, how they are made, what they signify…..

Numbers: plenty of space. Everyone is welcome – 22 Hàng Buồm is a huge venue.
Dress code: not essential but it will be super lovely for as many of us to dress in traditional or modern áo dài.
