Another in our series of ‘People of Hanoi‘, where we chat to the real Hanoians who were born & raised, educated, lived & worked in Hanoi. Hanoi has fewer and fewer residents who can truly call this city their home ever since the day of their birth.
Meet our lovely FVH friend who helps FVH behind the scenes with cultural and personal information, about society and the city, and the evolving faces of Hanoi. Nguyễn Viết Dũng has offered to host a round table discussion at his home in Ngọc Thụy, Gia Lâm
Dũng was born in 1942 into a well-read culture-loving family with well-informed parents who themselves had an interesting history. He was educated in the French system, he set up a construction company in Hanoi in the early days of his working life, and now he and his wife Thanh (a former leading ophthalmologist at the national eye hospital) live a quiet retired life which sees Dũng doing a lot of cultural research and translating books and poems into VN, French and even German and vice-versa. Highly educated and with a head full of knowledge Dũng will share many fascinating stories from growing up in the last decade of the French period to the present day.
He has been an integral part of FVH ever since we were formed. He has also introduced FVH to many of our other lovely friends such as Tôn Thất Triêm who set up the Hope Choir. One of our main FVH founders Hữu Ngọc (cultural writer, editor and author) was one of his best friends, and our amazing Trần Doãn Lâm (who does our lectures) is in his close friendship circle.
