Tết craft workshop (p.m) – Tết calligraphy & mini hangings

This is a regular feature in the calendar in the run up to lunar new year.  A fun and informative Tết calligraphy workshop.

There are many symbolic and important practices in the run up to and during this occasion, one of them includes Tết calligraphy and mini Tết hangings.

At this time of year people may want to have on display some particular characters which embody their wishes and dreams for the new year a such as phúc (Happiness), lộc phát (fortune), lộc (wealth), thọ (longevity), Đức (virtue) and so on.

A chance to join the morning or afternoon session and learn about the meanings and importance of specific words that are used on the calligraphy hangings.  Master calligrapher Lộc will instruct in the basics of the calligraphic style, and we practice first on A4 sheets of normal paper and then on dó paper. We concentrate on writing auspcious words that mean something to us for the new year. And hopefully we feel confident enough to progress to writing some words in the calligraphic style on the  minature red or yellow calligraphy hangings – this is harder than you may think. These are known as  lắng nghe mùa xuân về and they bring good wishes for the new year (to be hung e.g on kumquat trees and used as Tết decorations).

Come and join this cozy workshop that begins with a small welcoming tea ceremony to bring good wishes for Tết before chatting to Lộc about his work and craft followed by the workshop.

Venue:  Bup and Lộc’ home/calligraphy studio in Quý Kiến str, Cầu Giấy.

Meeting point:  a cafe round the corner, we walk round together. Information will be in the welcome email sent to those confirmed on either the a.m or p.m workshop a few days before.

Numbers: per workshop – up to 8 pax per session  – total 16 pax across the morning and afternoon

VND 390,000 pp (same for adults and children). Includes tea appreciation, workshop, all materials and calligraphy hangings
