SUMMARY:People of the Old Quarter series 4: with Phạm Mạnh Việt
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to our 4th  People of the Old Quarter . This is when we meet those who were born and have lived (and worked) all their lives in the heart of the Old Quarter. Each meeting has a different format\, from show and tell\, taking part in a workshop\, to eating and drinking\, or just listening to the person’s life stories. We gather in their homes\, place of work or a nearby cafe to hear about their family history\, their trade\, their stories and memories (whether ordinary or extraordinary)\, the history of their house and the street they live in. They may be well known characters in the community\, the neighbour next door or someone we meet in passing. But they all have something in common. They all have a story to tell. \nThis month we meet Mr Phạm Mạnh Việt. Born in 1950\, he still lives in his family home in Hang Cot street.  We met him totally randomly.  He eats dinner at his favourite cơm bình dân in  Lãn Ông street\, which is where one of our FVH friends met him. They realised he loves to meet people\, to talk and share his stories.  And they introduced him to FVH. Việt worked in local government\, and we discovered he was instrumental in drafting the motorbike helmet law that came into effect in 2007.  He also writes beautifully. When we met him to discuss the idea of joining our People of the Old Quarter he read the memories he had written\, in a moving literary way\,  about when he and his classmates were evacuated from Hanoi to Vạn Phúc in Thanh Tri district in the early days of the American War. And he got quite emotional. \nWe think FVH is the perfect channel for him.  Please come and join Việt as he shares stories of his childhood\, memories of the nearby streets\, and later his working life\, especially about the helmet law\, and why he loves this particular cơm bình dân. \nHe will speak in VN and Hang\, another of our People of the Old Quarter\, will translate to ENG. \nThe format is chatting and discussing in a local café for a few hours on a Sunday afternoon. \nPlease RSVP to stella@fvheritage.org \n10 people very  max (from 5 to 10 people) \nVenue – RO cafe\, 90 Hang Ma street \n2.30pm for a few hours \nVND 200\,000 includes contribution to Viet and Hang. \n  \n©1999 Friends of Vietnam Heritage.
