SUMMARY:Film Night - 2 short films: Bánh Bao Bikes and Dedicated to Mr. Dieu
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to screen 2 short films and hopefully invite some of the directors to attend for Q&A \nFilm 1 Bánh Bao Bikes (Fried Dumplings & Bikes) – made by a former FVH committee member – Brenda Mattick   \nMr Tuan\, vice-president of the Hanoi Old & New Bicycle Club\, runs a busy Báhn Bao ‘fried dumpling’ street food stall. In his spare time – sometimes way after midnight –  he finds\, buys\, restores and rides vintage bicycles from the French colonial era. \nAs a young boy during Vietnam’s harsh ‘Subsidy Era’  (1975–1986)\, Tuan remembers when bicycles actually cost more than houses. His father had owned a bicycle\, but Tuan and his six siblings weren’t allowed to touch it\, let alone ride it. This bike was their only form of transport: a precious asset. \nHanoi was once a city of bicycles. It is now congested\, polluted and noisy thanks to an increased ‘standard of living’. Bicycles are generally considered only as transport for the poor: those who cannot afford a motor bike or car. \nAlthough motorbikes and cars are the main form of personal transport in Hanoi these days\, Tuan has never forgotten the value of bicycles. He hopes that more Hanoians will get back on their bicycles for a cleaner\, calmer\, and more community-minded city. \n(it is very appropriate too that we show this film as it links nicely with our Peugeot bikes talk on on 16/11) \nBrenda Mattick – Co-Director/Producer (an Australian who previously worked in communications/international development  in Vietnam and Cambodia)\nSelected screenings\nBicycle Film Festival (BFF) – New York\, 2015\nBFF Québec – 2015\nNew Urbanism Film Festival – LA\, 2017\nEthnografilm – Cinema 13\, Paris\, 2017\nSuburbinale – Groß-Enzersdorf\, Austria\, 2018 \nFilm 2:  Documentary “Dedicated to Mr. Dieu” (FVH first showed this film a Cinemateque)\nThis is a very touching and at times humorous documentary made by a talented young female director (Ms. Hien Anh). It is a short story about Mr. Dieu\, an elderly talented and humorous man. Though he is considered as an “odd” man with lots of particular habits\, he always keeps smiling with a passion for teaching languages and translating history books. Featuring an elderly scholar with his firm belief and ideology in a simple way.  And a touching contrast between him and his wife. Beautifully filmed and edited. \nThis documentary won two prizes at the 2015 Vietnam Golden Lotus Bub Festival:  for excellent first documentary film making by a young director and  audience prize. \nRSVP to Van \nPlease arrive by 7.15pm latest to collect and pay for your ticket at TPD. As a courtesy to those on the waiting list – please cancel if you can’t come.\nReserved seating tickets are allocated on a first come – first served basis.
