SUMMARY:Workshop: Experiencing lacquer painting with artisan Vũ Huy Mến (Hạ Thái Lacquer Village) - FULL
DESCRIPTION:FVH is taking part in  the Vietnam Festival of Creativity & Design : Hanoi 2020\nHanoi: “Culture and Creativity” \nActivity: traditional craft workshop \nTHIS EXCURSION IS FULL \nWhen exploring imperial architecture\, ancient houses\, Buddhism and temples in Vietnam\, horizontal boards\, parallel sentences and statues are identifiable and beautifully decorated in red and yellow. The art of decorating these works developed alongside Vietnam’s history\, and many famous craft villages still exist today. According to some documents\, this profession has an 800-year-old history. \nAlthough Hạ Thái village was not the first to invent lacquer painting\, it is the centre of this art in Vietnam.  It was initiated by Vietnamese painters at the Indochina College of Fine Arts in the 1930s (now the Vietnam Fine Arts University). They introduced lacquer painting techniques to the people in Hạ Thái village\, and from then on many artisans were born. \nVietnamese lacquer has become an inspiration for artists in other countries like China or Japan to study. Each lacquer painting has a unique beauty. Enjoying lacquer painting requires thorough knowledge of painting techniques to understand the talent and dedication of artisans as well as the sophistication and creativity\, which lies beneath the layers of colour. There are never two identical works. \nListen to the stories of craftsmanship as we admire the unique lacquer artworks. Join us as we meet artisan Vũ Huy Mến – the “treasure” of Hạ Thái village who has received many honours and recognitions – as he shares his knowledge and stories in the morning session. Then in the afternoon we work on our 20x20cm lacquer painting under his guidance in the afternoon workshop following the traditional steps.  \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nDoing lacquer painting according to traditional methods and materials usually takes weeks\, months or even years to complete. Within the scope of this one-day excursion and workshop\, Mr Vũ Huy Mến will explain and instruct us to complete our work of art using traditional methods and substitute materials in a prepared 20x20cm red painted lacquer board (prepared 1 month before our visit) \nNotes:  \n\nMaximum 14 spaces available for 16 seater mini bus. Detailed programme and joining instructions will be sent to those who successfully RSVP.   We will have a waiting list if the  tour becomes full\nPlease bring personal water bottles as we are reducing the plastic consumption. Bring your own packed picnic lunch or the village has food stalls and cafes.\nMeeting point: outside the Pan Pacific Hotel\, Yên Phụ Road\, at the corner of Thanh Niên Road.\n\n\nAt the time of publishing our calender the excursion is fine to take place.   NB in case the Covid-19 situation gets worse at any time we may need to postpone our event at short notice.
