SUMMARY:Cultural Series – The history and evolution of the Vietnamese áo dài
DESCRIPTION:This is a morning event \n‘Do you remember when I said:\n“When you come with me\,\nPlease don’t forget your blue ao dai.”\nDear\, who would suspect that\nSuch a color as that loving blue\nWould never fade?’   The “The Blue Ao Dai” by Doan Chuan – Tu Linh (1955). \nVietnam’s national dress – the áo dài – has long been featured in songs\, poetry\, art\, literature\, and is an iconic symbol of the country.    It is a style of dress for both women and men with an ancient history that goes far deeper than today’s  women’s áo dài . Come along to this event and learn the secrets that the  áo dài holds. \nThe name áo dài  was originally given to the  outfits worn at the court of the Nguyen lords in Hue in the 18th century.  It evolved into the  áo ngũ thân\, a five-paneled gown worn in the 19th and early 20th centuries ….and to where we are today. \nWe honoured that 2-3 experts on the  áo ngũ thân and the áo dài will be presenting everything there is to know about Vietnam’s national dress.  And also there is a focus on the the  áo dài for men (this is not just for women’s dress). \nAssociate Professor\, Dr. Đinh Hồng Hải\nHai’s research is in the fields of the arts\, humanity\, anthropology and related social sciences. He has studied at Harvard University (USA\, 2008-2010) and defended his PhD dissertation at the Graduate School of Social Sciences in 2011. He also worked as a research fellow at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (China\, 2006-2007). He is now a researcher at the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (since 2001) and a lecturer at the Vietnam National University Hanoi. He has published a number of books on Vietnamese traditional cultural symbols which are highly appreciated by culture lovers \nArtist\, Lecturer\, Dr. Trần Hậu Yên Thế\nThe has spent more than 25 years studying\, teaching and researching traditional fine art history & culture. He has been successful with different scientific research on traditional art subjects along with the publication of important art books such as the symbols of Hanoi’s architectural decorative style; the mythical Nghe animal (which\, in Vietnamese folklore is a creature with traits of a dog).  In 2020\, Tran Hau Yen The was awarded the prestige “Bui Xuan Phai\, For the love of Hanoi” prize for his great contribution in preserving Hanoi’s art beauty through his qualified research and books. The has worked as a history of art lecturer at the Hanoi Fine Art university and he is currently a lecturer at the Vietnam National University \nThey will explain how the styles developed\, what the true traditional and original outfit really is\, what is right and wrong with the modern day áo dài\, how other nation’s national dress have influenced today’s designs in Vietnam\,  the traditional áo ngũ thân for men (and women)\,  why today’s women’s áo dài modern style is an adaption  of the true original… \nQ&A and Hai and The will conclude the event with a short guided tour of some of the cultural exhibits in the museum including a small áo dài  display. \nMax 30 pax \nVenue:  We are delighted that this event is taking place in the Hanoi Museum and hopefully the start of a future collaboration for FVH with this venue.
