SUMMARY:Craft workshop – origami Year of the Horse (năm Bính Ngọ 2026) - FULL
DESCRIPTION:THIS WORKSHOP IS NOW FULL. PLEASE RSVP FOR THE WAITING LIST. THANKS \nOrigami is the Japanese art of paper folding. In modern usage\, the word “origami” is often used as an inclusive term for all folding practices\, regardless of their culture of origin…. (Wikipedia) \nWe have just entered the Year of the Fire Horse\, which is a very relevant topic for an origami workshop and in celebration of those of us who are the year of the horse. \nOrigami artist Hoàng Tiến Quyết will guide us in how to make a paper horse. To keep it as relevant as possible to Vietnam we will fold with traditional Vietnamese dó paper (that has been layered with glue to strenghten the paper).  Quyết’s website explains “I have been folding paper since I was a small kid. At the time I was amazed at how a flat sheet of paper could transform into beautiful 3D animals and objects\, and it was also a joy of a kid who could make his own toys.  I kept folding alone for a long time\, till I found Vietnam Origami Group forum ……I like working with new and fresh ideas\, and always try to breathe life and my personality into my models. I hope people can also feel that from my work” \nAnd more info about Quyếtand his work here:  https://htquyet.origami.vn/about \nProgramme \n\nIntroduction to Quyết\nStory of the 12 animal years in Vietnam\nPaper types\nIntroduction to the art of origami\nFold your own horse\n\nPlease RSVP to stella@fvheritage.org \nVenue: at Nhung and Linh’s studio off Kim Ma\, map and location will be sent to those confirmed \nAmount: 390\,000 VND pp (same price for everyone) to include instruction and material \nNumbers: ideal 6 to very max  8 pax due to space restrictions \n(this workshop is rescheduled from 8 March to 5 April) \n  \nPlease follow and like us:Share this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)Click to share on Google+ (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Like this:Like Loading...

DESCRIPTION:ALL SPACES TAKEN THANKS SO MUCH FOR EVERYONE WHO HAS RSVPD. \nA spring concert for Peace and Friendship\nTwo of our lovely FVH friends are kindly hosting this late afternoon concert performed by the amazing Hope Choir at their home in Nghi Tàm. \nThe aim of the concert is for us to come together for a lovely afternoon with friends\, to celebrate songs of peace\, friendship\, and the community\, on the occasion of Vietnam’s Day for People with Disabilities. \nThe Hope Choir (Hợp ca Hy Vọng) is a group of blind and severely visually impaired singers and folk musicians.   If you have not yet heard them perform you will undoubtedly be impressed.  If you already know them then they need no introduction.   They are amazing – not because of vision impairment but because they are superb singers and musicians in their own right.  The choir was formed about 20 years ago by pianist Tôn Thất Triêm and his opera singer wife Xuân Thành. What they have achieved with minimal funds and very little resource is incredible.  Triêm teaches the choir the meaning of each word of the songs (regardless of the language)\, they transcribe the lyrics into braille\, and sing in the language of that song. \nPlease join us on  Sunday 12 April for this intimate\, warm and cozy afternooon with friends in the company of amazing music and songs. \nPROGRAMME\nArrivals from 4pm – social\, mingle\, drinks and snacks\n5pm programme commences. Intro to the choir and Triem\n5pm-6.30pm – a selection of folk music melodies performed by the Hope Choir traditional folk musicians followed by songs from across the world sung in the language of that song\nFrom 6.30pm please stay to enjoy more drinks and snacks and further get to know the choir \nWe welcome a donation of VND 250\,000 pp. After event expenses and refreshments The Hope Choir would like proceeds from the concert to go to The Hanoi Association for the Relief of Disabled Children. \nVenue: Nghi Tàm\, Từ Hoa. SUMMARY:Hanoi City Walk (ENG) a.m: Buildings & Barbers\, a Battle & Burials - FULL
DESCRIPTION:THIS WALK IS NOW FULL. PLEASE RSVP FOR THE WAITING LIST. THANKS \nThis walk is held only on the 1st and 15th of the lunar month when we know everywhere we need open will be open. \nToday is 1st day of the 3rd lunar month \nWelcome to a long FVH Hanoi City walk – it lasts very minimum 3.5 hours\, on average 4 hours but can be as long as 5 hours depending if we linger and stop at cafes on the way. So please regard this as a half day walk. It is not to be rushed\, we take our time to really explore. We start at a café near Kim Liên Temple/Communal House on Xã Đàn Street and end in Tây Sơn street (not far from the Novotel hotel). \nAn early 8.30am start\, finish about 1pm or may be 2pm ! \nWhile planning this walk 4 themes emerged hence its name. We walk through 2 khu tập thể /old condominiums\, we discover the origins of Hanoi’s Street barbers\, hear the stories of the liberation of the Thăng Long Citadel in 1789 and end where houses are built side by side to an ancient mausoleum area.  And this is the only walk going over 3 pedestrian overpass bridges. \nCompared to others this walk is a lot longer and more detailed so a lot to take in and a particularly good one for those who have been in Hanoi a long time. \nNumbers. ideally 6 people\, definately no more than 8 people \nRSVP to stella@fvheritage.org \nExact meeting and end points will be in the welcome email for those confirmed on the walk. Please note they are not near each other \n  \n©1999 Friends of Vietnam Heritage. All rights reserved. SUMMARY:Art & Craft (a.m): Dó paper fan making workshop (3 hrs\, half day or full day)
DESCRIPTION:Hồng Ký\, who we partner with for our dó paper workshops\, has moved her studio to Đông Anh near Cổ Loa\, near the banks of the Hoàng Giang River. \nHer longer term plan is to open a small cultural/artistic centre nearby for art and music workshops and in the near future she will run actual dó paper making workshop in the grounds of her studio to make paper from scratch. \nOur workshop for April (9.30am start) \nGiven summer has come early and we all need a fan\, we will make a dó paper fan each. Its more challenging than it looks. (The last time we had a fan making workshop was in 2018 when Hồng Ký was based on train street in a tiny study overlooking the rail tracks). \nWorkshop includes: \n\nInformation on dó paper for those who don’t know about the paper\nAll materials for making the fan and instruction\nSome refreshments\n\n \nHồng Ký has only just set up in her current venue and its lovely\, simple\, and very rustic. Its in a part of Đông Anh that has so far escaped the rapidly spreading urban developments and once you are off the main road it feels like you are in the countryside. \nNote that her workshop space is outside undercover and we are heading for hot weather. SUMMARY:Excursion (day): Bá Dương Nội Village annual kite flying festival - FULL
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT IS NOW FULL\, PLEASE RSVP FOR THE WAITING LIST THANKS \nBá Dương Nội Village – kite making/flying village. The final day of the kite festival week is the kite flying competition for adults and kite clubs – its always on the 15th day of the 3rd lunar month. This year = 1 May (solar calendar). Unlike previous years it means it falls on a major national holiday weekend. And the invite for FVH this year is a bit different. \nThe  Bá Dương Nội Village kite committee this year is inviting us to join them for an early lunch so its now a full day event if you want to come to the lunch. \nBACKGROUND\nFVH has had a friendship with this village since 2017 and we started joining their annual kite festival in 2018. Bá Dương Nội village is a 1\,000 year-old kite making village on the Red River on the outskirts of Hanoi. Generations of villagers have kept this tradition alive. The kites are shaped as crescent moons or boats\, with wooden flutes attached. The wind passes through the flutes making haunting melodies.  The village dates back to the 10th century Dinh Dynasty. Bá Dương Nội has a reputation as one of Vietnam’s main kite flying centres. \nWeek-long festivities culminate with the adult kite competition\, always 15th day of 3rd lunar month\, which is when we attend.  The festival attracts competitors from all over Vietnam; usually FVH are the only visitors\, which keeps it lovely and local; however\, in recent years some tourists** have started to encroach on this pure Vietnamese event. \nAGENDA\nWe are honoured that Mr Ha\, Chairman of the village\, and our lovely friend Mr Tu\, previously on the Bá Dương Nội Cultural committee\, personally invite us. \n9am Meet: at the Pan Pacific Hotel\, Yên Phụ\, on the corner of Thanh Niên Rd we need to arrive by 9.45am/10am latest at the village. \n10am we are invited to join the committee and village for lunch \nFrom about 1.30pm opening proceedings (called by the drum and plenty of speeches) \nFrom about 2.15pm onwards – the  kite flying competition takes place. We watch the competitors fly their kites running through small fields of morning glory. We sometimes get invited to Mr Ha’s house – the Chairman – for tea \nNote there will or could be a gap between lunch and the kites. The village is now very urban and nothing much to see; but all along the Red River dyke road a short way walk along on each side other villages dotted about and in easy reach by foot. And they have festivals too. So you are very welcome to go exploring and then come back to the kite festival….. \nOPTIONS \n\nThis is the recommended option as we being specially invited to the lunch. Full day – lunch\, and the kite festival\nAfternoon only – make your own way to arrive by 1.15pm and come back with us on the min bus\nAternoon only – book your own car and driver to stay with you and arrive by 1.15pm\n\n  \nIMPORTANT TO NOTE \n\nNon-touristy -we are usually the only visitors who attend**\nPlease dress respectfully (despite hot humid weather – NO shorts\, short outfits\, strapless tops\, as we will be in the kite temple to start which is spiritual place for the kites\nIt is extremely noisy and crowded in a small area\nThe proceedings are in Vietnamese – almost no one at the village speaks ENG.\nFlexibility and compromise are critical. Please go with the flow. Duration at the village depends on the weather and when the competition can start as it depends on the wind. Expect heat and humidity.  We don’t stay for the awards at the end as we avoid lots of hanging around as there is very little to do and see in the village. We leave 4pm-4.15pm before the judging and awards ceremony. You are welcome to stay longer but you need to make your own way back – its very hard to get taxis/grabs\, but there is a public bus – the bus stop is about a 10-15 min walk up Red River dyke road\nYou are welcome to stroll around the village and the nearby ones over the dyke road\, mingle with the locals\, sit on the edge of the morning glory field with a beer and ice cream; if you are lucky\, one of the locals may show you how to the fly a kite\, Mr Ha sometimes invites us to his home for tea depending how busy he is\nThere is very little of interest to see in the village – its become very urban\n\nCurrent price pp VND 300k pp for those coming for the full day for lunch and the mini bus both ways to \nNumbers:   Very maximum 15 people (we keep to a small group) \nRSVP:  to stella@fvheritage.org  \nEveryone coming must provide mobile number/WA/zalo \n  \n©1999 Friends of Vietnam Heritage.
