SUMMARY:Cultural Series - The story of the Nôm script with Dr Lâm
DESCRIPTION:How many times on excursions and visiting places of worship you been told something is written in Hán or Nôm but you have no idea what it says or what the differences are between the characters?  Now is your chance to learn about these 2 fascinating scripts and their importance in Vietnam. \nWhy did Vietnam have a dual script? It was because the Chinese characters did not satisfy the vocabulary and grammar of the Vietnamese language. They did not sound like Vietnamese. \nHow and why did Nôm appear\, and what are the influences of Hán script?  Why are there 2 different scripts that look very similar? Who still read and interpret Nôm today?  What do they verbally sound like? How do you write these scripts and how can you tell the difference between the 2? These questions and many more …. And  to be able to write Nôm  one had to know how to write Hán. \nDr Trần Đoan Lâm\, former Editor in Chief of Thế Giới publishers and member of the Đình Làng Việt group  of cultural scholars and intellectuals will take us on a fascinating journey to the time before Quốc ngữ  became Vietnam’s national script (of today). \nLâm has the ability to introduce the basic concept of this intriguing and complicated topic in an easy-to-understand way. \nAppx 2.5 hours but as with all talks with Lâm please allow up to 3 hours or stay later to chat more with him. \nVenue:  The Dinh Lang Viet group meeting space\, room 107\, house D4\, Trung Tu collective area\, Dong Da district\, Đặng Văn Ngữ street. near Xa Dan lake\, near Xa Dan street. Detailed venue information on exact location with venue photos will be sent to those who sign up. https://goo.gl/maps/GknwBmgpBKocUBvK7 \nPlease RSVP to stella@fvheritage.org \nMaximum 25 people. \n250\,000 VND pp to cover contribution to the venue\, hosts and there will also be some refreshments at the end of the talk \nAn idea of time and distance to the venue direct by car:\nFrom Syrena in Xuan Dieu – about 20 mins 7-8 kim\nFrom Truc Bach – about 16 mins 5-6km\nFrom Lotte – about 12-14 mins 5km \nPlease follow and like us:Share this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)Click to share on Google+ (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Like this:Like Loading...
