SUMMARY:Film Night: Đừng đốt (Don't Burn)
DESCRIPTION:Đặng Nhật Minh was born in Hue on 10 May 1938 and he is one of Vietnam’s leading film directors. His father was a doctor and Minh planned to follow in his father’s footsteps. But he found his way into the film world and in 1965 made his first film about a geological engineer. \nHe is the first Vietnamese person to be awarded the Nikkei Asia Prize for Culture in 1999.  In 2007 the was awarded the Vietnamese government’s Ho Chi Minh Award for his work in film. \nBASED ON A TRUE STORY \nĐừng đốt (Don’t Burn) is Minh’s film produced in 2009 starring Tina Duong\, Minh Huong and Ben Rindner based on the diary of female doctor and martyr Dr Đặng Thùy Trâm. She wrote the diary from 1968 until 2 days before she died in 1970 while she worked at the national liberation front hospital. \nIn the spring of 2005 an old mother living in Hanoi received a diary which turned out to be that of Dr Trâm. It was discovered by a US military officer who kept it for 35 years. Minh based his film on her diary selecting facts and the context of war as she described to honour her and the Vietnamese people’s noble sacrifice for “the dream of peace and independence” of the fatherland. \nThere are continual shifts in time\, between the present\, past and future\, as well as dreams. These shifting and varying sensory experiences drawn from Dr Trâm’s youth and adult life as well as from the life of the American\, keeps the viewer hooked on the film. \nWe are showing this film in celebration of Reunification Day 30/4 and are delighted that Minh will attend the screening. He will be present for Q&A after so please don’t rush off but stay to chat to one of Vietnam’s most influential film makers. \nThe movie was premiered at the International 19th Annual Fukuoka Film Festival in Japan\, winning the audience prize. The film was released in late April 2009 in Vietnam and shown at the ASEM international film festival in Hanoi in mid-May 2009. It also won the Golden Lotus in Vietnam Film Festival in 2009 and Golden Kite Award in Vietnam in 2010 taking six different prizes. \n100-minute long with English subtitles\, followed by Q&A and a small presentation from FVH to Minh \nLocation: TPD – The Centre for Development of Movie Talent\, 51 Tran Hung Dao\, Hanoi. \nYour reservation is not confirmed until you receive our reply email. \nPlease arrive by 7.15pm latest to collect and pay for your ticket at TPD.
