SUMMARY:Cultural series - small group lecture on Vietnamese religious folk paintings
DESCRIPTION:“Vietnam Folklore paintings” a small group talk and show and tell with art collector and researcher Nguyễn Thu Hoà and VN-ENG interpretation and contribution to the discussion  by our favourite Dr Trần Đoàn Lâm (former editor in chief of The Gioi publishers). \nHoà is currently the Director of the Hanoi Ceramic Museum – one of the first private ceramic museums in Vietnam. \nThis will be a small group discussion and show and tell as she explains how she carried out her research\, the differences in paintings across the regions in terms of art\, symbols\, colours\, illustrations and use of the paintings. She will concentrate in particular on tranh đồ thế which are paintings for deities and those who have died. People may burn them in celebration of death anniversaries of their relatives and for worshipping deities.  Tranh = paintings\, Đồ thế = replacement \n  \nHoà explains in her own words – “My love of Vietnamese folk paintings grew from the book by Phan Cẩm Thượng\, Cung Khắc Lược and Lê Quốc Việt. After that I was guided by researcher Đỗ Tam Quốc and the woodblock prints of the south. My collection now includes about 300 woodblocks.  I have researched Vietnamese folk paintings throughout Vietnam and abroad over the past 10 years building up a comprehensive picture” \nVietnamese folk paintings include those of\nThe Dao ethnic group\nThe North eg Đông Hồ paintings\nPaintings of Huế\nOf the South Central Coastal area\nOf Chinese people in the South. \nFolk paintings (including those from Sình village in Huế) are probably the most commonly used folk paintings because they serve religious needs. As society modernizes\, industrial prints have gradually replaced woodblock prints and original folk paintings are gradually disappearing.
