SUMMARY:Cultural Series – Lecture. "Textiles of the ethnic minorities in Vietnam”. Talk with Mark Rapoport
DESCRIPTION:Vietnam has a rich tradition in textiles and there is a variety of hand-woven textiles among the different minority groups. Textiles do much more than cover the body. They convey identity\, marital status\, spiritual identity\, wealth\, social status\, tribal history\, accomplishments and personality. Even though textile weaving follows strong conventions\, there is room for individuality and differentiation\, and textiles may be said to “speak”. \nIn this talk \, we examine dozens of textiles from the northern and central parts of the country\, and learn to “hear” what they have to say. \nDr. Rapoport is an American pediatrician who is a resident of Hanoi. He began collecting Vietnamese tribal art in 1969 and owns a gallery in Hanoi. Objects from his collection (both Vietnamese and African) are now housed in numerous museums in the U.S and in Vietnam. \nThis is the second of a series of presentations on “The Material Culture Traditions of the Ethnic Minorities of Viet Nam”. The first of Mark’s series talk on 25 February was on the topic of “Shamanism” \nWatch for future announcements on additional presentations in this series in coming months on the following topics: \n– The Technology of Living –Strategies and Tools for Survival of Tribal Peoples \n– “Every Object Tells a Story”- Discovering History In and Through Artifacts \n– “The Desire for Beauty” \nTime:              Saturday 13 April at 10 AM. \nPlace:               Fifty-four Traditions Gallery\, 30 Hang Bun \nCost:                150\,000 VND \nLimit:               20 persons \nTo Register:     with John \nPlease follow and like us:Share this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)Click to share on Google+ (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Like this:Like Loading...\n\n	Related\n
