March 6, 2022 @ 2:30 PM - 4:00 PM
200,000VND“An afternoon chat with Ngọc Linh – the pride of Vietnamese movie art design”
FVH is proud to be able to hold an afternoon at the home of Meritorious Artist Ngọc Linh, well known talented Vietnamese painter and cinema-stage art designer.
Join a small group of us as we meet and chat with legendary 92 years’ old painter and cinema design artist Ngọc Linh. We hear about his career in movie and stage art design as he regales us with his stories about art, beauty and movie making from the start of Vietnamese cinema industry. He explains how movies in the 1950s and 60s were made, and some of the tricks of the trade.
Ngọc Linh’s real name is Vi Văn Bích. He was born in 1930 in Lạng Sơn Province, northern Vietnam into a prestigious family. He joined the army revolution in 1946 and was sent to attend an art course at the Viet Bac base where he was taught fine art by some of Vietnam’s greatest artists such as Tô Ngọc Vân, Trần Văn Cẩn, and Bùi Trang Chước. Later on he was assigned to work in the cinematographic institute (as one of the first ever 2 art directors) and he was in charge of the art direction on 25 varied Vietnamese feature films right from the first day that the feature films studios opened over 50 years ago. This brought him many accolades, awards and special prizes both at home and internationally. Besides movie making, Ngọc Linh is a successful and famous visual artist. His paintings and art works have been shown in various exhibitions in Vietnam and abroad and he still paints profusely today and in 2020 he had a solo exhbition at 42 Yet Kieu, University of Fine Arts. Through his art works and his philosophy on life Ngọc Linh portrays his soul of love for life, for humanity and for Hanoi. His art works (we will see some on display in his home) are full of life, vibrant colours, hope and with a youthful feel.
Ngoc Linh will speak in Vietnamese and Van on our committee will translate. Ngoc Linh may be 92 years old but he probably has more energy than all of us put together.
A big thank you to the Director of National Archives centre 3 for putting us in touch with him. And we hope to plan a bigger presentation held at the Archives with Ngoc Linh later this year where he can present in more technical detail about the early days of Vietnamese movie making.
Location: Ngọc Linh’s private home (off Hao Nam street not far from Cat Linh street and Cat Linh metro station) – his address and location map will be sent to those who attend the afternoon.
