SUMMARY:1 day excursion -  Phát Diệm Cathedral (with legendary Professor Lê Văn Lan)
DESCRIPTION:Day trip to Phát Diệm Cathedral\, in Kim Sơn District\, Ninh Bình Province. This is a very successful trip that FVH has arranged a few times in the past. And we are delighted that the legendary Professor Lê Văn Lan is joining our tour to help lead and talk about the Cathedral complex. The Professor  is a famous Vietnamese history Professor and one of the founding members of the Vietnamese Institute of History.   \nPhát Diệm is located 121 km south of Hanoi and 29 km southeast of Ninh Binh. This architecturally and historically well-known cathedral was built between 1875 and 1899 by a Vietnamese catholic priest Father Tran Luc. It is famous for its extraordinary architecture\, a sort of Franco-Sino-Vietnamese pagoda: sloping tile roofs with up-curving dragons at the corners\, wooden colonnades and carved stone reliefs. Climb the bell tower and enjoy the view of the cathedral church\, its annex buildings and the surrounding area dotted with many more churches. Phát Diệm covers over 2 hectares and consists of the Cathedral with 5 separate side chapels\, 3 artificial grottoes and the majestic bell tower. \nWe are making plans to meet relevant people associated with different aspects of the complex which will enhance the visit. And with time permitting\, we will visit a local family making Rush plant artistic mats and baskets on the way back to Hanoi. \nPlease bring your own packed lunch and snacks and we will sit in the front courtyard around the reflecting pool\, enjoying the quietness of village life (there will also be local restaurants and items to purchase outside the Cathedral) \nMeeting point – outside the Pan Pacific\, Yên Phụ Rd\, at the corner of Thanh Niên Rd \nThe trip from Hanoi to Phát Diệm will take about 3 hours + a short comfort break and similar time on the way back. We will have plenty of time at the complex.
